The Fenix E-STAR backup flashlight combines NiMH battery power and a handheld dynamo. The low self-discharge, 1300 mAh NiMH battery is charged inside the flashlight using the USB-C connector. Thanks to it, the flashlight can develop a short-term power output of up to 100 lumens. In emergency situations, the built-in dynamo can be used as a power source, powered by a lever that can be simply squeezed with the fingers. The dynamo is charged partly by a NiMH battery, but mainly by a built-in supercapacitor, which can supply energy for up to two minutes of illumination on a single charge (about 15-20 seconds of squeezing the dynamo). When powered by dynamo, the battery life of the flashlight is theoretically infinite and depends only on the endurance of your hand. The flashlight can work even without the battery, which can be replaced by a regular AA - battery in case of emergency. The Fenix E-STAR is an excellent backup flashlight for conditions where you will not have access to mains power or spare batteries for long periods of time.
All flashlight parameters (luminous flux, battery life, waterproof, range, and shock resistance) are measured in accordance with ANSI/NEMA FL 1-2009.
Fenix E-STAR dynamo flashlight specifications
- Quality LED with 50,000 hours lifetime.
- Four power modes when powered by a 1300 mAh AA battery: TURBO 100 lumens (while holding the button) -> 20 lumens (10 hours) -> 3 lumens (60 hours) -> 1 lumen (120 hours).
- Two power modes when powered from the capacitor only: 3 lumens (50 seconds)-> 1 lumen (2 minutes).
- Power is provided by a single AA-size NiMH battery with a 1300 mAh capacity and minimized self-discharge. Can be replaced with a standard AA battery if required.
- Built-in super capacitor stores energy from the dynamo - the flashlight lights for up to two minutes without batteries inserted and without dynamo power.
- Recharge the battery via USB-C cable.
- Charge the capacitor by activating the dynamo by repeatedly pressing the hand lever.
- Range up to 40 meters (400 cd).
- Overheat protection.
- Waterproof to IP24 standard (rain).
- Shockproof to drops from a height of 1 meter.
- Dimensions 135 x 54 x 24 mm.
- Weight 128 grams (including battery).

Using the Fenix E-STAR dynamo
From manufacture, there may be aninsulating cap inside the flashlight on the battery. Remove it from the battery before first use.
To turn on the flashlight, slide the rectangular switch to the front position, this will always light the flashlight on the lowest power. Moving it in the opposite direction will turn off the flashlight. To change the brightness of the flashlight, press the square button while the flashlight is on. This will switch the flashlight to the next output level. To activate the 100 lumen turbo mode, hold the square button for more than 0.5 seconds. When the button is released, the flashlight will return to the last light mode used.
Overheat protection - after one minute of operation on the highest turbo power, the flashlight will switch to a lower mode.
NiMH battery charging - flip off the rubber cap of the charging connector on the side of the flashlight and plug the included cable into the flashlight (USB-C connector), plug the other end of the cable into a computer or a USB mains or car adapter (not included). During charging, the indicator LED by the button will glow red and turn green when fully charged. After charging the flashlight, reseal the charging connector thoroughly with the rubber cap. Charging a fully discharged battery takes approximately 3 hours using a 1A power supply. In an emergency, the flashlight can also be used while charging, but only the 20 lumen mode will be available and the charging time will be extended.
Dynamo Power - In the event of a dead battery, the built-in dynamo powered lever can be used to power the flashlight, which is simply squeezed with the fingers. The dynamo charges partly the NiMH battery, but mainly the built-in supercapacitor, which can supply energy for up to two minutes of light on a single charge (about 15-20 seconds of squeezing the dynamo). In case the supercapacitor is charged, the dynamo also slowly recharges the embedded battery. However, fully charging a discharged battery with the dynamo would require about 20 hours of constant dynamo squeezing.
Warning
- Do not disassemble the sealed parts of the flashlight yourself, this will void the warranty.
- When using a disposable pencil battery, remove it from the flashlight if you will not be using it for an extended period of time or if the battery is dead. This will prevent the battery from draining and subsequently damaging the flashlight.
- Insert the battery with the positive pole towards the head of the flashlight.
